Research Compliance

The University of Florida is committed to conducting research in compliance with established federal, state and local rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Provided below are links to various compliance topics where you can learn more about our programs.

Policies, Procedures and General Information

The Researcher’s Handbook published and maintained by DSR contains the policies, procedures and general information for conducting research at the University of Florida.

Use of Human Subjects in Research

All research involving human subjects is reviewed by the University through its IRB’s to ensure that the subject’s welfare and rights are protected as mandated by federal regulations. You may not conduct any research using human subjects without prior IRB approval.

Use of Vertebrate Animals in Research

To ensure compliance with all regulations, policies and standards in place to protect animal welfare, IACUC members review all requests for approval to use vertebrate animals. You may not conduct any research using vertebrate animals without prior IACUC approval.

Environmental Health & Safety and Research Compliance

Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) has the responsibility of regulating and developing policies and procedures to provide for a safe research environment at UF. Below are some notable topics that require EHS review and approval before commencing work. For complete details on these and other topics. including training opportunities please visit the EHS web site.

  • EHS—Use of Biohazards and Recombinant DNA

The use of biohazards and recombinant DNA at the University of Florida is monitored by the Biological Safety Office within the Environmental Health & Safety Division. The same office regulates Recombinant DNA usage which is reviewed by the University Institutional Biosafety Committee.

  • EHS—Use of Radioactive Materials and Radiation-Producing Devices

When radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices are involved in research, the procurement, storage, utilization and safety has to be approved by the Radiation Control & Radiological Services Department within the Environmental Health & Safety Division.

  • EHS—Use of Select Agents

To work with Select Agents at the University of Florida approval must be obtained the Biological Safety Office within the Environmental Health & Safety Division.

The NIH Select Agent web page provides the NIH awards process for research involving infectious agents and select agents, including submissions, awards, monitoring and oversight. This page also clarifies the processes and responsibilities for investigations of laboratory accidents, research-related illnesses and potential Biosafety violations.

  • EHS—Minors in the Laboratory or Animal Facilities

Unless enrolled as a UF student, minors are not allowed to work or conduct research in a UF laboratory, greenhouse or animal facility, except where allowed per this policy.
