Matching Funds for New Training Grants
Training grants are important mechanisms to support graduate students. They are peer-reviewed and thus provide important external validation of the quality of the proposed program and faculty mentors. They are also valuable recruiting tools as they are a source of multi-year awards, and students who are appointed on a training grant can use this prestigious award as an entry on their CVs. Federal agencies view an institutional commitment to these grants as an important signal that the university values the activity.
In order to help our efforts to secure more training grants for graduate education, the Office of Research will provide an institutional match (usually in the form of additional stipends and/or tuition payments) and a letter of support for all NEW training grants that are submitted to external agencies. A request that includes as much information as possible about the grant to be submitted should be sent to the Office of the Vice President/Dean in advance of the deadline. Matches from colleges will be considered in determining the level of support from the Office of Research.
